This picture is
from the Summer 2006 CMS meeting in Calgary, where a few of us took an extra day
to visit Lake
Louise and Banff, so as you can see we have a lot of fun on Studc! Please email
me at
chair-studc@cms.math.ca if you have any suggestions for us.

Pawel Gladki (Western Representative)
I am originally from Katowice, Poland, where I was born, grew up and
earned my M.Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Silesia. As far as I
remember, it was in my high school when I got really interested in
Mathematics and decided to study this subject. A little bit earlier,
when I was in Grade One or so, I was reading numerous novels by J. O.
Curwood or J. London, where I first learned about Saskatchewan - and
guess what, this is where I ended up working towards my Ph. D. Since my
arrival to Saskatoon in 2003, I have been lucky to meet truly wonderful
people - my supervisor, Prof. Murray Marshall, is certainly one of them
- and a genuinely exciting working environment. My areas of research
include the algebraic theory of quadratic forms and spaces of orderings.
My non-mathematical interests include books (I particularly enjoy SF -
just as a typical graduate student in sciences...), mountain hiking
(which is a bit ironic for somebody living in Saskatchewan...) and -
last but not least - sailing.".

Sandra Gregov (Ontario Representative) I'm a Master's student
at McMaster University in Computer Science and apart of the Advanced
Optimization Laboratory (a.k.a. AdvOL). For my Master's thesis, I am working on
sorting strings using Berge k-moves - see my webpage for more info. I completed
my undergraduate degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics at York University. In
my undergraduate studies, I did research in rigidity theory and geometry. My
projects on the CMS Student Committee include corresponding with the CUMC
organizing committee and updating the CUMC Operations Manual, designing a Studc
poster and I am the MITACS liaison. Webpage: http://optlab.mcmaster.ca/~gregovs/

Graham Robertson (General member) I am currently
entering my second year at the University of Toronto more or less
undeclared. I am interested in the specialist program of Bioinformatics
but enrolling in a pure Computer Science, Biology, or Mathematics
program isn't out of the question. I enjoy puzzles, painting,
animating, playing guitar, and (of course) math! I am originally from
Chester, England but I moved to Ottawa when I was six years old and
that is where I grew up until three years ago. I am currently
eight-teen years old and I work, study, play, and live in Toronto.

Alejandro Erickson Al Erickson is a 4th year undergraduate at
Simon Fraser University in the Honours Mathematics program. He is heavily
involved in the Math Student Union and was the president for parts of 2005 and
2006. After completing his second summer of undergraduate research (with NSERC
in 2006) he has become an applied calculus workshop teaching assistant. Al
plans to graduate in April 2007 and apply to grad school at an eastern
university. His favourite things to do are travelling, back country camping,
doing capoeira, and learning languages.
Kathryn Mann Kathryn is a fourth year undergraduate math
and philosophy specialist at the University of Toronto. When she's not
doing math in Toronto, she likes to do math elsewhere: in Budapest with
the "Budapest Semesters in Math" program, and most recently in Perugia,
Italy at the Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria summer school. After
this year she'll be moving on to do a PhD in math... hopefully
somewhere equally exciting!

Nathaniel Johnston (Ontario representative)
Nathaniel
is a PhD mathematics student at the University of Guelph working in the
field of quantum computing. His true passion lies somewhere between
mathematics and computer science, although his discipline of choice
requires him to tinker with some physics as well. He has worked as a
tutor at the Math Learning Center at the University of Guelph for three
years, and was an executive member of their Math & Stats Club
during his third and fourth years as an undergraduate student. His time
away from academia often consists of thinking about random math
problems and coding internet-based games. His true downtime usually
involves watching movies or playing video games. |

Bradley Dart (Atlantic representative)
I was born and
raised in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. I am 19 years old and
just finished my second year of a Joint Honours Bachelor of Science in
Applied Mathematics and Physics at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
I'm interesting in a variety of areas in pure and applied mathematics,
as well as in philosophy and physics. I spend my time reading,
daydreaming, walking, listening to music and hanging out in coffee
shops, as well as studying and doing mathematics. When I finish my
undergraduate degree I plan on attending graduate school, but narrowing
it down to just one area of research is going to be difficult! |

Natasha Richardson
I love math. This simple fact is the reason I am entering my fourth year of
mathematics study at Simon Fraser University. When not in classes, I'm
volunteering as a math tutor, fulfilling my presidential responsibilities to
the SFU Math Student Union and working as a research assistant with a
mathematical modelling group. Besides math, I also love teaching and I have
a particular interest in math education. A graduate degree is definitely in
my future; whether it will be in math or math education I have yet to
decide. |
