About Studc

The CMS Student Committee (Studc) was created in 1999 to help the Canadian Mathematical Society serve the needs of students. This includes assisting the current president of the Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference and fostering a community of mathematics students through events, newsletters, and this web site. The committee consists of 1 Chair or 2 Co-Chairs, 5 regional members, a faculty advisor, the editor of the student newsletter, the CUMC president, the student Webmaster, and the executive director of the CMS. Each member of Studc takes responsibility for one or more Studc projects. The terms of reference for Studc gives official description of the purpose, duties and responsibilities, and composition of the committee.

Chairs
Kseniya Garaschuk
I am originally from Belarus, living in Canada since 2000. I got my Bachelor and Master degrees in Pure Math at Simon Fraser University and have started my PhD in Combinatorics at University of Victoria in fall 2008. My main research interests lie in the areas of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic cryptography and coding theory. I was actively involved with SFU Math Student Union, have served as the Treasurer for CUMC 2007 and have co-founded and co-organized the Pure Math Graduate Student Conference in fall 2007. I enjoy my morning runs, weekend hikes and Thursday night baking. My two other biggest passions are dark chocolate and Formula One racing.

I am just getting started on a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Guelph. I completed my BSc and MSc at the University of Regina. My research interests lie within the fields of Operator Algebras and Quantum Information Theory. I hope to one day make significant contributions to the area and have a major theorem named after me. I enjoy being involved in student clubs and committees; I believe graduate studies is not just about classes and research, it's about the whole graduate student experience. As Chair, my goal is to increase student participation and communication on a national scale.

I am a fourth year student at Memorial University of Newfoundland, completing a joint B.Sc (Hons) in Applied Mathematics and Physics. I'm interested in many areas of mathematics, with the common thread being their applicability to physics. Today there is a great deal of cross-fertilization between mathematics and physics, so there is no shortage of topics to catch my attention. My current research revolves around open quantum systems. Outside of mathematics I enjoy reading (particularly philosophy), listening to music and playing classical guitar. After completing my undergraduate degree next year I plan to continue on into graduate studies in mathematical physics.

Jerrod Smith (Western representative)
I am entering my fourth year of study at the University of Regina where I am working towards a Bachelor of Science, majoring in mathematics with a minor in biochemistry. During the summer of 2010, I am conducting research in Quantum Information Theory with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the U of R, with funding from a NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA). I have previously held an NSERC USRA in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the U of R where I performed research in enzyme biochemistry. I am actively involved in student clubs at the U of R; at present, I am on the executive of the Science Student Society (S3) and the Math Actuarial Science and Statistics Student Society (MASS). My goal is complete a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in mathematics and to make a significant contribution to the field, both in research and teaching. Beyond mathematics, my interests include both sport and music. I am playing my third season with the Regina Dodgers AAA Junior Men’s baseball team, and I am involved in intramural Ultimate Frisbee at the U of R. I have been playing acoustic and electric guitar for over eight years.

David Thomson (Ontario representative)
I am a third-year PhD student at Carleton University. I did my B.Math and MSc at Carleton, and returned there after a brief term in engineering at Waterloo. My research interests are in any and all aspects of finite fields and their applications. I was the President of the Carleton Math Society in 2008-2009 and the VP of the 2009 CUMC. I love playing sports of all kinds, particularly basketball, and I am passionate about delicious and succulent food and drink.

Louis-Xavier Proulx (Quebec representative)
I growned up in Rimouski, a little town in the eastern part of Quebec. I moved in Montreal 3 years ago to begin my studies in mathematics. After my first year, I went to Brussels on a student exchange and I came back last year to complete my degree at Université de Montréal. I just started a master in applied mathematics at the same university. Differential equations, dynamical systems, modelisation and geometry are some of my favorite topics in mathematics. I am always surprised to realize how maths are related to different fields even if no links can be made on first sight. I have a real passion for travel and photography. Being a curious guy always looking forward to learn something new, I try to read more on history, arts, politics, sciences... almost everything!

I am currently entering my final year in an Advanced Math Degree at the University of Manitoba and am eagerly anticipating the transition into graduate studies. I enjoy my work as both lab demonstrator and math tutor, though have yet to decide if teaching or research will be pursued. I enjoy travelling and have just completed an exchange semester in Helsinki, Finland. Hopefully graduate studies will be another opportunity to change location and combine that with further math studies.

I am originally from Lévis, Québec and I am currently doing my undergraduate degree in mathematics at Université de Sherbrooke. Last summer, I did an undergraduate research in geometry. I am currently on the board of the Sciences Student Union. Also, I am regularly attending the Math Club of the Department of Mathematics. My interests in mathematics are principally in geometry and algebra. My other interests include computer science and music.

Faculty Advisor
Robert Woodrow
Robert has served as a faculty member representative on the Student Committee since it was founded. While he is currently kept busy in administration as Associate Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Calgary, he has a long standing interest in mathematical logic and combinatorics, as well as in problem solving. He has authored the Olympiad Corner in Crux Mathematicorum with Mathematical Mayhem since 1988. In this snapshot (taken by A. Raspaud of Bordeaux) he is standing on the deck of a ferry en route between Hyères and the island of Porquerolles during a graph theory meeting in 2005.
