What's New?

Here is just some of what's new on the Studc site:
  • (June, 2010) Studc had a meeting in Fredericton, organized a student panel on the hiring process and organized its first poster session (pictures of the prize winners).
  • (December, 2009) Studc had a meeting in Windsor, organized a student panel on publishing process (pictures) and had a great social (picture). Check out the minutes from the panel discussion (minutes).
  • (June, 2008) Studc had a great meeting in Montreal, Québec and welcomed its new member, Bradley. We went to a student social organised by MITACS (a boat cruise) and we organized a student panel on the hiring process in the universities.
  • (December, 2007) Studc had a successful meeting in London, Ontario and welcomed its new members. We also had a student panel and a student social.
  • (January, 2007) Studc's most recent newsletter was distributed to schools across Canada.
  • (January, 2007) A new section has been created on the Studc site called Useful info. There you will find a new guide about how to make the most of attending conferences as well as minutes of past Studc meetings. Other useful documents will be posted there as they become available.
  • (December, 2006) Studc had a successful meeting in Toronto and welcomed six new members.
  • (October 14, 2006) The CMS Studc Discussion Forum, a forum for math students across Canada goes live.
  • (October, 2006) The Fall 2006 Newsletter has been posted.
  • (April 10, 2006) The Spring 2006 Newsletter has been posted.
  • (March 11, 2006) Information on the student distribution lists has been posted.
  • (January 15 & 29, 2006) Some general improvements were implemented.

Math Events for Students Supported by Studc

Studc helps to support several math events for students each year, beyond the CUMC. Below are just some of the events we have supported in the past. Are you planning an math event for students? Would you like some support for your event? If so, the Studc co-chairs would love to hear about your plans.

2007:

2006:

  • Graduate Student Social, CMS Winter Meeting, Toronto, December 9, 2006
  • Graduate Student Social, CMS Summer Meeting, Calgary, June 3, 2006

2005

The Graduate Student Social at the International Linear Algebra Society Conference, Regina, June 26-29, 2005.

The Graduate Student Social was held at a downtown restaurant and attracted 27 students from the conference. The social was hosted by two University of Regina undergraduate students.

PIMS Summer Workshop in Mathematical Biology, Edmonton, May 2-12, 2005

The summer workshop's aim was to introduce students to mathematical modelling and analysis applied to real biological systems. Through lectures and exercises, students were introduced to various techniques of mathematical modelling (discrete models, ODE's, PDE's, stochastic models). With a self-guided tutorial the students learned how to use Maple to simulate mathematical models and relate them to biological data. Through projects, teams of 2-3 students experience mathematical modeling first hand.  The workshop ran for 11 days, with 14 student from across Canada participating.
